Other than knowing basic strategy, there are a few things that you should remember when playing micro stakes games:

There’s no trickery

This applies to both you and your opponents.  You don’t want to be tricky because it will fly right over your opponents’ heads.  Don’t even think about the small bluff on the river that’s supposed to look like a value bet – that thing is going to get called!

Your opponents won’t be tricky either because they just aren’t that sophisticated at the micro stakes.  They might try the occasional, random bluff but other than that, they are just trying to read their hands and figure out what beats what.  If they bet, they probably have a strong hand.

Don’t bluff

Bluffing doesn’t work well at all in micro stakes games because your opponents will call everything.  You won’t know if you’re bluffing into a draw, a weak hand or a strong hand because they play them all the same way – by calling, calling, calling.  It’s hard to bluff in micro stakes games so don’t waste your time.

Your opponents chase

You’ll laugh at the junk opponents try to chase with.  You’ll also get very irritated when that junk gets lucky and beats your strong hands.  Just know that your micro stakes opponents will chase everything they can.

Sometimes it will seem like the games are unbeatable with so many opponents chasing against you.  Believe me, these games are very beatable.  If you just wait for strong hands and bet hard when you get them, you’ll come out on top over the long run.

Don’t berate the fish

Yes, it’s maddening when the monkey in seat 4 catches his miracle card on the river after playing Q4 offsuit to a preflop raise.  No matter how irritated you get, don’t criticize your opponents.

You know you want your opponents to play like morons because it’s easy money for you.  Sometimes you’re going to have a bad day but don’t make it worse by giving out free poker tips to the fish.

Respect their bets

Don’t worry about getting bluffed out of the pot when your opponents bet.  Most micro stakes players are passive and it takes a lot to make them bet.  Occasionally they will make random bluffs and show them to you but don’t mind that.  Your micro stakes opponents aren’t that tricky so when they bet, it’s usually with a good hand.

Bet when strong, fold when weak

This one is a little obvious but it’s easy to overlook.  The basic idea here is if you have a strong hand, just bet it.  Don’t get all weird about it and try to be Mr. Fancy Play.  Bet your strong hands so you can get money and fold your weak hands to save money.  These are micro stakes players you’re up against so don’t worry about them catching on to your predictable play.  Your table image means nothing to them.

Buy in for 100BB

Don’t be one of those guys who joins .10/.25 NL games with $7.52.  You’re up against weak players so keep your stack maxed out at all times.  If you get into a big pot against a mega fish, you’ll be glad you bought in for 100BB.

Keep a healthy bankroll

Don’t ever let your bankroll fall below 20 buyins at your stakes.  If you ever find yourself with less than 20 buyins, move down and rebuild until you have 20 buyins again.  The loose play at micro stakes games can cause some pretty wild variance so you always want to take care of your bankroll.
