There are hundreds of online poker sites out there and they compete fiercely for market share. One of the ways each poker site works to get ahead of the competition is to offer deposit bonuses to every new player.
Poker deposit bonuses are usually awarded on some sort of percentage match basis. For example, PartyPoker has a 100% match bonus up to $500. This means that for each dollar you deposit, they will match it with a dollar of their own.
Using the same example from above, if you deposited $300 at PartyPoker, they would throw in an additional $300 on top of that. In effect, you would be able to play with $600 even though you only had to deposit $300.
Clearing Poker Bonuses
Sometimes you’ll see the words “clearing requirements” when reading about poker bonuses. The deal here is that poker sites don’t just give you the money and then let you immediately cash it out. That kind of system would be abused until every poker site went out of business.
To keep things fair, poker sites require that you “clear” your bonuses by playing a certain number of hands in real money poker games. After you complete the clearing requirements, your bonus money can be withdrawn along with the rest of your winnings.
A lot of the times, poker sites require you to earn a certain number of frequent player points to release the bonus. Frequent player points are earned by playing in real money ring games and tournaments.
Your frequent player points serve two separate purposes. First, they unlock your bonus. Second, they can be used to take advantage of special comps from the poker site. You can use your points to buy poker merchandise, electronics, free tournament entries and more, depending on how many points you’ve managed to accumulate.
