As you become more experienced in online poker, one of the most important pieces of software you can use is a poker HUD (Heads-Up Display). This type of tool is so popular that the most serious poker forum members always post their relevant HUD stats when asking for hand advice.

What exactly is a HUD?

In short, it is a tool that attaches itself to your poker tables and displays valuable information about your opponents at the table. It includes useful figures such as their 3bet%, Pre-Flop Raising frequency (PFR %), Aggressiveness% and dozens of others. The figures themselves are based on your opponent’s hand history since you last sat down at the table (you can also buy/import hand histories for better accuracy). You can customise which statistics your HUD displays, however I’ve outlined the most relevant ones below.

Advantages of a HUD

The advantage of using HUD software is that it increases your decision making ability in cash games. It allows you to judge the good players from the fish, identify the LAG players from the TAGs, and most importantly it helps you make more profitable decisions at different streets. For example, if an opponent has a high 3bet frequency (7%), it tells me he is 3betting with a wide range of hands which includes J10 and JK and I will be more likely to call or 4bet such opponents. In contrast, your typical TAG opponent will only 3bet their top 3-5% of hands (AJ+, 1010+).

Similarly, a RFI 30% (Raises First In) tells me that an opponent is open-raising pots with his top 30% of hands, when given the opportunity to do so. This means he is playing loose aggressive and probably stealing a lot of pots with weak hands. I’ll often 3bet such players when I’m playing from the blinds.

Standard Set-Up for Your HUD

Every player has his own preferences, but the most popular set-up I’ve found is as follows:

On the top line, I have VPIP % (Voluntarily Put Money In The Pot), PFR % (Pre-Flop Raise) and AF% (Aggression Factor). I will also have the number of hands played (to understand what sample size I’m looking at).

On the bottom line I will have c-bet%, Fold to c-bet%, 3-Bet%, Fold to 3Bet% and CR% (Check-Raise).

Together these figures can give me a complete insight into my opponent’s playing style. For instance, I can identify a TAG and LAG from their VPIP% figure alone. It shows what range of starting hands my opponent is opening or calling flops with. Anything below 20% indicates a tight player, and anything above 40% is a LAG.

Final Remarks on Using a HUD

Hopefully I’ll have identified the major advantages to using a HUD at the table and how it can help your game. In terms advocating its use I’d recommend anyone playing long term or NL50+ to use one. At NL100+ at least, I can guarantee you that the most successful players will be using a HUD.

If you would like to try one, HUD’s usually come with any decent poker tracking software. The two most popular ones are Poker Tracker and Holdem Manager.

I’ve been hearing about Rush Poker for a while now but finally got around to trying it out for myself today. I have to say, this is very cool. If you haven’t yet had a chance to try Rush Poker, you have to try this out. Rush Poker completely eliminates all waiting in between hands.

Play Rush Poker at Full Tilt Poker

Use the referral code HOOKMEUP for a $600 deposit bonus

How Rush Poker Works

As soon as you push the fold button, Full Tilt Poker instantly transfers you to a new table and deals you in instantly. There’s no more waiting in between hands. In fact, you don’t even have to wait during hands. If you start out with a junk hand, you don’t even have to wait for it to be your turn. Just hit the quick-fold button and Full Tilt will move you on to the next table.

To get started, click on the “Rush Poker” tab inside the poker lobby. You’ll then be able to choose from the different games available. Individual tables aren’t listed like in normal ring games. Instead, the rush poker lobby tells you how many people are playing in total and gives you the option to join in.

Once you join, you’ll catch on to what’s going on pretty quickly. You’ll be dealt in to tables just like normal until you fold. As soon as you fold or hit the “quick fold” button, you’ll be taken to a new table. Don’t like the crappy hand you have? No worries – just fold and move on to the next hand.

Rush Poker Strategy

Rush Poker is a different beast than any other type of poker. You can get away with playing tighter in Rush Poker because the other players can’t keep as close track of you. On top of that, you can play tight and still make a decent hourly return because as soon as you fold, you are taken to a new hand.

At the same time, you can also get away with stealing more. The other players aren’t as tempted to defend their blinds or play crappy hands because they know they can always fold and move on to a new hand. In Rush Poker, there are a lot of blinds up for the taking.

One thing I would suggest you do is invest in Holdem Manager so you can keep stats on your opponents. The games move so fast that you’ll see familiar names but not remember anything about those players. With the aid of Holdem Manager, you’ll eventually get a basic idea of how some of your opponents are playing.

Rush Poker and Bonuses

Players who don’t already have an account at Full Tilt can sign up for a $600 deposit bonus. The bonus was already easy to clear but it’s now even easier thanks to Rush Poker. You can play many more hands per hour in Rush Poker and earn Full Tilt Points much faster than normal.

When you sign up and make a deposit at Full Tilt Poker, you’ll be asked for your Full Tilt Poker Bonus code. Use the code BeatNoLimit and you’ll be tracked to receive a 100% bonus on your first deposit there. There’s no easier or faster way to double your money than by getting a bonus and clearing it with Rush Poker.

As soon as I mention online poker, the follow up question will invariably be one of these 3 questions:

1. Is online poker legal?

2. Is online poker safe?

3. How much do you make / lose?

Geez.

The answer to two of these questions can be found here and here. Today, we’re going to talk about the safety of online poker. But first, let’s talk about the dangers of online poker, because danger is more exciting than safety.

The Dangers of Online Poker

Ok, this headline is a little dramatic but I guess it fits. Online poker really isn’t any more dangerous than any other activity on the internet. Just like using your credit card to purchase things off eBay, you use your credit card to purchase virtual chips at online poker sites. Anytime you use your credit card on the computer, you’re taking a small risk.

As long as you keep a decent virus scanner and firewall on your computer, you should be fine. Hell, I feel safer giving my credit card number to PokerStars than I do handing my card to the drugged out McDonalds worker who could easily go in the back and jot down my credit card number. (No offense McDonalds workers – I used to work in fast food too.)

Besides that, people also worry about trusting their money with poker sites that they can’t physically see or touch. That’s an understandable concern but you should think about it the same way as you think about online shopping. As long as you only shop with large, reputable vendors, you’ll be fine. The same thing goes for online poker.

My Most Trusted Poker Site:

PokerStars

Finally, the issue raised most often by moral objectors to poker is problem gambling. Politicians and fun-hating commies all over the world claim that online poker makes it so easy to “click the mouse and lose your house.” It seems logical, at first glance, to assume that online poker increases instances of problem gambling. After all, you would think that online poker makes it more convenient for problem gamblers to feed their addiction.

Conversely, recent studies in the UK (where online poker and online gambling are legal and regulated), instances of problem gambling have gone up zero percent since online poker became legal.

Sadly, your government is probably the single greatest danger in online poker. If you live in the United States, you have a greater risk of the US Government stealing your money than any poker site stealing it. Thousands of players were affected in 2007 when the FBI froze players’ funds for more than six months during an investigation into the poker funding company, Neteller.

It’s hard telling what the various governments of the world will do regarding online gambling and poker but it generally looks like things are going better for poker. You’ll still find the occasional, errant politician or prosecutor looking to make a name for himself, but generally things are improving.

Playing Safe Online Poker

If you follow a few simple precautions, playing online poker is completely safe. The first and most important thing you should do is make sure you have a good antivirus program and a firewall. Most antivirus programs now come with firewalls so if you already have an antivirus program, you probably have a firewall.

Next, the most important thing you can do is play at large, well-known poker sites with a solid reputation. 99% of online poker sites are safe but there have been a couple in the past that have failed for various reasons. As long as you play at one of the poker sites reviewed here at BeatNoLimit.com or at many other websites, you’ll be fine.

With regards to problem gambling, it’s an issue that only affects about 0.6% of online gamblers. The best way to combat problem gambling is to be honest with yourself and learn when to give up. If you ever suspect you or a loved one has a gambling problem, there are several resources you can quickly access on the internet:

National Council on Problem Gambling

HelpGuide.Org

Gamblers Anonymous

And when it comes to the government, there are several things you can do to protect your interests. The first is to be an informed voter and to make your voice be heard through your vote. Second, you can join the Poker Player’s Alliance to help fight for online poker in the United States. In other countries, you might find similar groups as well.

So what’s it all mean?

Online poker is safe enough for me and for hundreds of thousands of people around the world. I’ve played online poker for years, made countless withdrawals and paid the bills with my earnings and haven’t had any problems or major concerns. I only hope that our government starts to look at the issue with logic rather than with political greed.

If you’renot familiar with Double or Nothing tournaments, they are just single table tournaments in which the top 5 players get their buyins doubled and the bottom 5 players go home empty handed.

Double or Nothing tournaments don’t have the massive prize pools that you commonly see with other tournaments but they are an awesome way to double your money. They don’t take long to play, the competition is easy and there is a lot less stress involved in playing Double or Nothing SNGs. I’m surprised nobody thought of these earlier!

Once you get the hang of these tournaments, there’s some good money to be made. The strategy for Double or Nothing SNGs is pretty simple so they can be multi-tabled with ease. On top of that, you’ll earn a lot of frequent player points with these.

Buyins

Party Poker holds Double or Nothing SNGs at several buyin levels:

$5 +$1

$10 + $1

$30 +$3

$50 +$5

If you’re looking for Double or Nothing tournaments at lower or higher levels than these, I recommend you give PokerStars a try. They have Double or Nothing tournaments at almost every buyin level.

Build Your Bankroll with Double or Nothing SNGs

The Party Poker Double or Nothings are a great way to build your bankroll because they are more dependable sources of money than regular tournament play. That doesn’t mean they are guaranteed money by any means – it just means that if you’re a winning player, you’ll experience fewer rollercoaster swings with Double or Nothing SNGs than with traditional tournament play.

They are also good for building the bankroll because it’s easy to play a lot of these things in a single session. That will help you earn frequent player points even faster, which can then be traded in for cash prizes and free tournament tickets.

Rake

The rake for Double or Nothing SNGs at Party Poker runs at about 10% unless you play at the $5 level. In that case, the rake is equal to 20% of the buyin fee which is a little hefty. The $5 SNGs are easy but the extra rake almost makes them not worth it. If you’re determined to play $5 Double or Nothings, I recommend PokerStars once again.

The maximum bonus amount for all three deposits is $300.

Clearing the PokerStars Reload Bonus

Your bonus amount is considered pending until you earn 25 VPPs per dollar in bonus money. This means that if you make a $600 deposit and earn a $300 bonus, you’ll need to earn a total of 7,500 VPPs to release the full bonus amount.

Once you earn the total number of necessary VPPs, the bonus amount is moved from your bonus account and placed in your real money account. Lump sum bonuses such as this one have always been my favorite. I don’t like the ones in which you earn $10 at a time because it feels underwhelming when comparing it to a big bonus like this one in which you get the entire bonus all at once.

Earning PokerStars VPPs

PokerStars VPPs are earned by playing in real money cash games and tournaments. You automatically earn 5 VPPs for each dollar you pay in rake or tournament fees. So if you play in $5 + $0.50 tournament, you’ll earn 2.5 VPPs. In cash games you earn VPPs based on the amount of rake you pay.

VPPs are automatically added to your account as you play at PokerStars. As soon as you earn the required number of VPPs, your bonus will be released and you still get to keep all your VPPs.

Bonus Code Example

___________________________________________________________________________

PokerStars has just released a special $600 first time deposit bonus. They had a weak, $50 bonus for years but finally decided to up the ante with a massive $600 bonus.

Current PokerStars players: Don’t feel left out – you weren’t forgotten this time around. You all can take advantage of a limited time reload bonus. It’s a 50% deposit bonus for up to $300 in extra cash (use the bonus code WCOOP). You can read more about the PokerStars reload bonus here.

PokerStars $600 Deposit Bonus

This is a 100% match bonus for up to $600 in bonus money. You can get this deposit all at once or you can use up to 3 different deposits (spread across a total of up to 90 days) to get up to $600 added to your account.

So if you sign up today and deposit $300, you’ll get $300 added. If you make another $300 deposit 2 weeks later, you’ll get a second $300 on top of that. Or you can just deposit $600 and get the bonus all it once. It’s all up to you.

Clearing the PokerStars Bonus

As soon as you make a deposit and use the bonus code STARS600, your bonus money will be placed in a special bonus area inside your player account. You’ll then have to earn 17 VPPs per dollar in bonus money to release this bonus. Every time you earn $10 worth of bonus money, that amount will automatically transfer from your bonus account to your real money account.

VPPs are pretty easy to earn at PokerStars but micro stakes players will take longer than people who play higher limits. In any case, you should be fine because you’ll have six months to clear the entire bonus.

Earning VPPs

VPP Points, or VIP Player Points, are earned by playing in real money ring games and tournaments at PokerStars. For every dollar you pay in rake or in tournament fees, you’ll earn 5 VPPs.

For example, if you play in a ring game and $1.00 is raked from your pot, you’ll earn 5 VPPs. This also works in the same way in tournaments. If you play in a $10 + $1 tournament, you’ll earn 5 VPPs. These VPPs can also be won in fractions when the rake doesn’t reach a full dollar.

What about the old $50 bonus?

The old $50 PokerStars deposit bonus is still available if you don’t plan on depositing much money. This bonus is a little easier to clear because it only requires 10 VPPs per dollar in bonus money. You can read about the $50 PokerStars bonus here.

Online and live poker might be the same game at heart but there are several key differences that make them completely different experiences for the player. Each form of poker has its own strengths but so far, online poker appears to be winning the popularity contest.

Live poker is still doing just fine, though. Major events like the World Series of Poker still draw thousands of players to locations all around the world every year. Live cash games can be found in every state and every city, even if the legality of some of those games is questionable.

Key differences between Live Poker and Online Poker:

1. Online poker is more convenient

When you play online from the computer, you don’t have to get dressed and fight traffic all the way to the casino. And that’s the best case scenario. If you don’t live near a casino, you’re just out of luck when it comes to poker. With online poker, all you need is a computer and a connection to the internet. If you’re reading this article, I’m guessing you have both.

2. Live poker has a greater social aspect

No matter how advanced online poker gets, it’s never going to be able to give you that same experience you get when playing with other real people in real life. The table conversation is different, you get to meet people and potentially make new friends when playing at live poker games.

Online poker has the chat box but that doesn’t quite compare to having real people playing at your table. Half the time the chat box just ends up being used by frustrated players as a place to vent.

3. Online poker can be played at ALL stakes

In live poker, you’re going to be limited to whatever stakes and games the casino or host wants to spread. Online poker sites are all automated so you’ll find games at all levels, ranging from penny games all the way up to games with $100,000 buyins.

Live poker rooms can’t afford to spread as many tables as online rooms because space is limited in a brick and mortar setting. In addition to that, the poker room has to hire dealers and floor staff to keep the games running. It’s just not possible for live poker rooms to spread as many different games as online poker rooms.

4. Live poker can be felt and touched

When you play in a live poker game, you can feel the chips with your own hands and see the cards with your own eyes. Even though online poker is as safe as live poker, the ability to see and touch everything with your own senses makes it feel a little more legit.

5. Online poker rooms offer deposit bonuses

One of the greatest advantages to playing online is the wide range of deposit bonuses you can get for signing up at poker sites. The online poker industry is extremely competitive and poker sites are willing to give cash bonuses to players just for picking them. At PokerStars, for example, you can get up to $50 free to get started.

Visit Full Tilt Poker Now

Use the bonus code HOOKMEUP for a $600 deposit bonus

6. Multi-tabling is possible online

If you’re a strategic player and actually wait for strong hands, it can get a little old playing one table at a time. When you play online, you can play as many tables at a time as you wish. Some of the internet’s biggest professional players make a living by playing 8 or more tables at a time. It takes a lot of practice to get to that level but once you’re able to manage multiple tables at a time, you’ll see major increases in your hourly win rate.

7. Online poker tools help you track statistics

Poker tools such as Holdem Manager and Poker Tracker can be used online to help you keep track of statistics such as how many hands you play, what your win rate is, which hands are your most profitable and much more. You’ll be surprised at how much you can learn about your game by analyzing some of the more important statistics.

If you play tournaments, there are certain tools that can be used to track both your own play and the play of your opponents. For example, Tournament Indicator is a popular tool that helps calculate your “M-zone” and suggests the best times to go all-in based on your hand, chip count, position and more. You can find out more at this Tournament Indicator review.

8. Online poker rooms charge less rake

Online poker rooms don’t have to pay upkeep on expensive buildings, they don’t have to hire tons of dealers, floor managers, cooks, waitresses and so on. Additionally, online poker sits can handle thousands of players at a time and open up an unlimited number of tables without having to find actual dealers to run the games.

That all adds up to make it much cheaper for online poker sites to stay in business. As a result, they can afford to charge much less rake than live poker rooms.

As a member of the Academy, you’ll get access to poker training lessons, videos, podcasts, quizzes and more – all led by some of the biggest name pros in the world.

Howard Lederer, Chris Ferguson, Allen Cunningham and many other big names contribute regularly to the Academy’s knowledge base. Whether you want to learn about cash games, multi-table tournaments or SNGs, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for.

How Do I Join?

To get a Bronze membership, all you have to do is sign up for a Full Tilt Poker player’s account. You don’t even have to make a deposit. Just sign up at Full Tilt and then you can log in to your Academy account any time using the same login.

Upgrading to the Silver or Gold membership is easy as well. All you have to do is earn 10 Full Tilt Points to get a Silver membership and 500 Full Tilt Points to get a Gold membership.

Once you earn enough points to upgrade your membership, you’re in for life. These points are also retroactive so if you already have a Full Tilt account, any points you’ve earned so far count towards your membership level.

What Do I Get?

Members of the Full Tilt Poker Academy get access to some of the internet’s best poker training tools including:

Lessons from over 100 Full Tilt pros

Video lessons that include both strategy talk and videos of the pros actually playing at tables and explaining their moves

Special challenges, much like the achievements system on the Xbox 360. As you complete these challenges, you’ll earn Academy Credits, which can be exchanged for cash, tournament tokens, poker gear and more

Podcasts from the pros

Sit-N-Learns – interactive video quizzes that will help you improve your knowledge of the game

If you score well in the Sit-N-Learns, you’ll be given entry to special freerolls every month

Access to the “My Account” feature which keeps details statistics of your game play, player ratings and challenge progress

Texas Holdem is the main game at the Full Tilt Academy but you’ll also find lessons for every other poker type. You can watch Chris Ferguson play a real $25,000 heads up match or sit in on Andy Bloch while he plays high stake H.O.R.S.E. games.

Join Full Tilt Poker Now to Get Access

Use the referral code BeatNoLimit for a $600 deposit bonus

Overall Quality

So far I’ve been impressed with the level of quality offered by the Full Tilt Academy. Some of the text based lessons are on the basic side, but that’s fine because the Academy was designed for all players of all skill levels.

Once you dig in to the videos and some of the advanced lessons, you’ll find all sorts of in-depth strategy material. The most useful content is probably the videos where you get to watch the pros play and explain every action they take at the tables.

Increasing the size of your poker bankroll will increase your profits to levels you would have never before believed possible. I can remember when I first dedicated myself to building a massive bankroll. It was back when I was playing $.50/$1.00 no limit with $100 buyins and was making maybe $20 an hour at poker.

$20 an hour seemed like a great income for a poker player but I wanted to move up in levels and start bringing home the real cash that could lead to $10,000 months. So I made a goal to get my bankroll up to the point where I could play $5/$10 no limit with $1,000 buyins.

At first, it was a rough road but as I dedicated myself to building a bankroll, it created a snowball effect that was almost unbelievable. I turned a $2,000 bankroll into $4,000 over the course of several months and then suddenly that $4,000 bankroll grew to about $10,000 in just a few weeks.

Soon after that, I was playing $2/$4 no limit and brought in an additional $10,000 that next month, pushing my bankroll up above the $20,000 mark. This was all on PartyPoker, by the way, when they accepted players from the United States.

Anyways, when I reached the $20,000 mark, I was still a little short-rolled for $5/$10 even though I had 20 buyins for the game. $5/$10 no limit has always been an aggressive game and I knew the swings would be wild up there so I hung around at $3/$6 no limit for a while and improved my skills.

The $3/$6 game was really tough back then, and probably still is now, but I learned a lot of great things there while playing on a comfortable bankroll. It seems like it would take forever to make that kind of money but when you’re playing with $600 buyins, the money comes in a lot faster than you would imagine.

I built up the bankroll at $3/$6 for a couple weeks until it broke the $30,000 mark. It was a great feeling but the battle was nowhere near over yet. I decided to give $5/$10 a shot when I hit the $30,000 mark and then things really took off.

$1,000 no limit was a tough game but the competition brought out the best in me. I got into so many memorable battles with some of the most talented players in the world. Old names like loloTRICKDu and BldSwtrs were terrors to play against but they also helped me take my game to new levels.

I was lucky enough to also go on a hot run at the time and that $30,000 roll turned into $40,000 within just a few days. At that level, it still seemed like a lot of money to me but it was actually only a 10 buyin upswing.

At the $40,000 mark, I decided to take a small shot at $10/$20 no limit. If $5/$10 is a tough game, $10/$20 is even worse. Not only was $10/$20 an aggressive game, but the players there knew when to play tight, when to fold and when to push you off a hand with huge bets. Building a 300BB stack wasn’t too difficult, but playing against other players with deep stacks who weren’t afraid to lose it all was a nightmare.

I initially got killed at $10/$20 and came back down to $5/$10 after losing a few buyins there. The money still felt too big for me and I knew I couldn’t play my A game when thinking about it in terms of dollars rather than in terms of big blinds.

So with my $35,000ish bankroll, I went back down to $5/$10 and started crushing those games. I started to get detached from the money at $5/$10 and was able to play as aggressive as necessary without worrying about losing the money.

That $35,000 soon turned into $50,000 and I was feeling invincible. I made $5/$10 my main game and played it all the time, whether at school on my laptop or at home playing 8 tables at a time. Another 30 buyins later, and I checked my PartyPoker cashier and saw that magical $80,000 mark.

Now I spend a lot of my time working on websites and writing poker strategy articles. Hopefully I’ll be able to tell you all one day about how I made a million dollars with websites. No, that’s not a joke; I’ll tell you all about it and how to do it.

Until then, keep on reading and keep on playing. Don’t forget to join my strategy newsletter (on the left side of the page) to get strategy articles and poker updates sent straight to your e-mail box. If you join, you’ll also get a free preview from my Kill No Limit e-book.

Good luck and thanks for reading!

Referral Code: 2567675

Bonus Amount: 110% up to $550

Bodog has been in the betting business for a long time and is one of the world’s most trusted gambling brands. They started out as a sports betting company but have expanded into entertainment, poker and MMA promotions.

As such a successful company, Bodog Poker is the only online poker room to offer a bonus that is partially given away up front without any clearing requirements. When you sign up at Bodog and use the referral code 2567675 when signing up, you’ll get a total of 110% added to your first deposit.

Look for the “How did you hear about us?” question during the sign up phase. It will look something like this:

How to claim your bonus

Getting your 110% bonus at Bodog is easy. Just follow these simple steps:

1. Visit the Bodog Poker website

2. Click on the “Join Us” button or download the software

3. Create an account

4. When it asks how you heard about Bodog, type in the referral code 2567675

After that, your bonus money will be automatically credited to your account when you make your first deposit. Once you have your account created, you won’t have to use any bonus codes when you make your deposit. As long as you use the referral code 2567675 when you sign up at Bodog, you’ll be good to go.

10% Instant Bonus

The first deposit you make a Bodog will result in you getting a total of 110% in bonus money but you’ll get 10% of that up front. So if you deposit $500, you’ll get $50 up front and $500 later.

The 10% bonus money can be used immediately to play in any poker games you want. If you want to withdraw the money, you can do so after earning 10 Bodog Points per dollar in bonus money.

100% Deposit Bonus

The 100% deposit works more like a traditional poker bonus. After you make your deposit, you’ll get an extra dollar added to your real-money account for every 10 Bodog points you earn in the first month, up to a maximum of 100% of your deposit.

Click here to Visit Bodog Poker and claim your bonus

Earning Bodog Points

In ring games, you can earn up to 1 Bodog point per hand.

In tournaments, you will earn 3 Bodog points per dollar paid in tournament fees.

As you earn points, you’ll automatically unlock the bonus. In addition to that, you get to keep all your Bodog points after you earn the bonus. You can then use these points to convert to cash and get free entry to tournaments.

Bonus Example

Let’s say you sign up at Bodog Poker and deposit $500. You’ll get $50 up front and have a total of $550 to play with. In the first month, you earn 5,000 points and get an additional $500 added to your real money account.
