Using Position to Abuse Your Opponents
Every poker site will tell you about the power of position but few of them explain how to use this power to abuse your opponents. The best poker players in the world know how to use position and they use it often - they are an absolute terror to play against. They rarely play hands from out of position but they are always trying to stir up action when in late position.
When you find yourself in late position, there are three easy things you can do to put pressure on your opponents and create bigger pots:
- Ruthlessly attack the blinds
- Play your draws with aggression
- Float them to death
Ruthlessly attack the blinds
The blinds are a tiny part of an average no limit stack and are therefore relatively unimportant. The funny thing is that it is endlessly annoying to your opponents when you constantly attack their blinds. After only a couple of steals, they'll start playing back at you with weaker hands which will give you an even bigger advantage.
When your opponents defend the blinds, it leaves them with big pots out of position. This makes it profitable for you because you'll win the majority of these pots - you have the power of position.
Play your draws with aggression
This one is my personal favorite. Draws are fun to play so why not play them aggressively? If you have position on an opponent, bet your draws if he checks. If he bets, raise your draws! You're the one in position so the advantage is all yours. He'll let you know if he has a big hand and you can get out relatively cheap because you have position.
If your opponents catch on to the fact that you play your draws aggressively, they're going to hate playing against you from out of position even more. Now every time you raise, they're going to wonder if you have a draw or a made hand. Eventually they'll make a mistake and you'll be there to capitalize on it because you have the advantage of position.
Float them to death
A "float" is a move where you call a bet on the flop with the sole intentions of making a bet on the turn to steal the pot. You can use the float against preflop raisers when they make standard continuation bets. Half the time they'll have a couple of high cards that whiffed the flop and they'll give up on the turn if you stay in on the flop. All it takes after that is a bet on the turn when they check to you. Easy money.
If you've ever been floated by someone, you already know how annoying it is. There are several things you can do to defend against the float but most of your opponents don't know about those tactics. If you float your opponents every chance you get, they will often start to play sloppily against you. They will try to make big turn bets, bluff check-raises and all sorts of other nonsense. All you need to do is hit one good hand, play it like a float and wait for the money to come.
